In an effort to continue to bring you up to current times (although I have thrown a couple current stories in here), I am still going in chronological order of our time with Heather and her family.
Just a few weeks after the video shoot we saw Heather and her kids again for Jackson’s first birthday. We didn’t want to throw a huge party for Jackson’s first birthday but when we started to get the invite list together, we realized it was inevitable, it would be a big party!!! And, like the over-achiever I am, I had to make the decorations myself (well that and I am cheap!). So it turned into be something so much more!!!
But like everything else in this journey of parenting an adopted child in a very open adoption, we invited Heather and her family!!! It has/is becoming more and more “normal” for them to be there than for them not to be there.
And there we sat opening birthday present after birthday present and we opened Heather’s gift to Jackson. The most beautiful book with pictures of her, hospital pictures and their time together (while filming the previous video I posted about). And along the book, read this beautiful poem.
“Once there were two women who never knew each other.
One you do not remember, the other you call Mother.
Two different lives shaped to make your one.
One became your guiding star, the other became your sun.
The first one gave you life, and the second taught you to live it.
The first gave you a need for love, the second was there to give it.
One gave you a nationality, the other gave you a name.
One gave you a talent, the other gave you an aim.
One gave you emotions, the other calmed your fears.
One saw your first sweet smile, the other dried your tears.
One sought for you a home that she could not provide,
The other prayed for a child – and her hopes were not denied.
And now you ask me through your tears,
The age old question unanswered through the years:
Heredity or environment – which are you a product of?
Neither my darling. Just two different kinds of love.”

Are you kidding me? Who does this? This is not the first time these words have crossed my mind when talking about the selfless acts Heather has done. But, seriously, are you kidding me? Who is this person? I know it sounds CRAZY but I fell in love with her (and not in some crazy romantic way- in the soul sister way!!!) all over again as I wiped away the tears reading these words and turning the pages. Her warm presence, her kind words, her selfless love, her beauty are all too much to take in sometimes.
Happiest of first birthdays to our darling, Jackson, you have made the world a better place.
